One of the things I lament about contemporary American movies is the sheer absence of a range of human forms. Even our most celebrated stars possess a fashion-magazine beauty that consigns them to the the realm of the otherworldly, the not-so-human. There's a banal uniformity to the sheen of their screen presence. The purpose of "Could They Make It Today?" is to present a roster of historically notable actors and ask whether they would have the looks to cut it in the contemporary star system.
That overbite. Those eyes! I love Miss Shelley. And I miss the great Altman. Sigh. Would she make it today? Not without a trip to the dentist.
